Have you ever wondered why some people seem to magically make things happen for themselves at the speed of light while others stay perpetually stuck?
Today, we’re going to talk the simple and proven (and woo-woo free) exercise that’ll help you transform yourself into one of the former and get whatever you want, whenever you want.
And in case you’re wondering how this is even possible…
It’s because, dear friend…here’s the real truth about this world we live in…
You create your reality through your beliefs.
A belief is nothing more than a thinking pattern you’ve developed about what you perceive to be the truth. As far as your mind is concerned, your beliefs are your absolute truth and thus, what you perceive to be true is—for you—the only truth.
This isn’t something most of us are taught growing up or something that’s even mentioned in the corporate world, so if you’re making a face and thinking, “Whaaaa…”
Let’s use an example of a situation that has probably happened to you at some point in the last few years…
You want to make more money at your job but you’re afraid: You might think, “I’m not worth $80,000” or “Why would anyone want to pay me that?” or “People are going to think I’m a b**** if I ask for more.”
So what do you do? You probably won’t even bother asking for that raise, or if you do ask you’ll do it in such an unconvincing manner (because you don’t believe it yourself) that your request is promptly brushed side…
And unless one day your boss magically says, “No, ~Contact.FirstName~, you ARE worth $80,000, let me give you a raise right now!”…you’ll probably never be paid that amount.
And because of that, you’ll continue believing you’re not worth $80,000.
It’s a vicious cycle.
In the same way, if you don’t think you can build a successful business and work for yourself, what do you think is going to happen?
How do you think you’ll react at the first setback? Or the second? Isn’t it highly likely you’ll just give up because you’ll take those setbacks as confirmation that you really can’t do it?
Compare that to if you believe, with the entire power of your being, that you’re meant to own a 6-figure business, do what you love, and travel the world. In that case, don’t you think you’d handle obstacles a little differently?
You’d probably instead view each setback is temporary and persist until you succeeded. And because you believe that, you don’t give up, you persist, and guess what…you eventually succeed.
In this way, because you act in accordance with your beliefs, your beliefs shape your life and become your self-fulfilling prophecy.
So, how do you start by retraining your mind to believe in whatever you want?
It comes down to this simple 3-part formula, explained in much more detail by Maxwell Maltz in his book, Psycho-cybernetics:
This is your belief of what is true (and as far as your mind is concerned, your absolute truth).
Examples of your current perceptions might be: you being able to do it vs. you not being able to do it, you being worth it vs. you not being worth it, you being smart enough vs. you not being smart enough, attractive vs. unattractive, etc.
Most of us have been programmed to believe certain things by our surroundings—our parents telling us that job is good enough, our friends telling us we’re crazy for even thinking about giving up that cushy salary, etc.
They mean well, but it’s time to change your perception. And the way you’ll do that is through self-repetition.
If you repeat something long enough and often enough, you’ll end up believing it. (Think back to your childhood — how many things did you believe simply because your parents kept on repeating them to you?)
If you keep on telling yourself that charging $1,000 / month is an incredible value for your clients, you’re going to start believing it. If you surround yourself with women who all say & believe that you CAN create your dream business, sooner or later you’re going to start believing that with 100% certainty as well.
This is the most important step you’ll need to take to reprogram your mind…
Decide on the new beliefs you want to instill in your mind, write them down, and repeat them to yourself every day until they are your new truth.
Here are a few example beliefs I had to reprogram my mind with when I started my business: I had to train myself to believe that there are an unlimited number of clients out there for me, that my prices are just right (not too high), and that my clients would consistently find me out of the billions of other people in the world.
As you work on your new beliefs, you’ll find that unfortunately, your old thought process won’t just magically disappear overnight. You’re not going to wake up tomorrow and think, YES I AM worth $5,000 for a 3-month package! Done!
Instead, before your new beliefs fully set in, you’ll have two conflicting beliefs (the old and the new) fighting for dominance inside you.
And guess what? Your brain does not like that kind of mental stress, so it’ll try to reduce the contrast between the conflicting beliefs by repeatedly attempting to disprove the newer one (because it’ll be the easier one to disprove).
That’s why in the beginning, it’ll be hard for you to believe that your clients are coming, that you can charge whatever you want, and that you can make however much you want.
It’ll continue being hard to believe as your brain resists this new, better thought pattern until you’ve built up enough evidence for the new belief to feel more “true” than the old one.
The key to breaking through is to persist in your new beliefs, which will allow you to take the action that’ll generate the evidence to support those new beliefs, which will in turn reinforce those beliefs even more.
Fun to think through that circle, huh?
Here’s an example to help clarify—if you believe that you can get a new client, you’ll do the work to get one & persist through “no’s” until you get a “yes,” which will then give you evidence that you can get your first client.
Or, you might think you can’t possibly charge $3K for a 6-month package, that no one will pay that. But you can repeat to yourself that it IS possible, you can see the evidence that there are others charging that and a lot more, and you can market yourself as if you’re that person already selling the $3K package.
Sooner or later, you’ll get a client who pays that price. And boom, now you have evidence that people will pay you $3K.
Finally, the third factor, time. Just as you didn’t develop your current beliefs in one day, you’ll need time to build up evidence and reprogram your mind for your new beliefs.
Don’t be frustrated that it doesn’t happen right away—it’s the same as losing weight or developing a new habit. It can be painful and difficult at first, but slowly, your new belief will rewrite itself over your old belief and become your reality.
That’s why persistence is so key—you need to give your mind the time to adjust. Keep persisting until your new belief becomes your standard belief.
Perception + Evidence + Time. That’s it. The keys to reprogramming your mind and thus changing your life.
