I have a confession that I’ve been keeping a secret: I’ve always wanted to be perfect.
The perfect daughter. The perfect sister. The perfect wife. The perfect student. The perfect employee. The perfect CEO. The perfect coach. The perfect Luisa, on every level and twice on Sunday.
And it’s only recently that I realized how fantastic it is to be imperfect…
Perfect is boring, but we’re still always striving for it. It’s our benchmark.
But it’s IMPOSSIBLE. Why is that the point we judge ourselves against? If we set our sights on a mark that can’t be reached, we’re setting ourselves up for failure.
Besides, part of attracting your ideal clients and growing your brand is letting your vulnerability shine.
Let’s use Amy Schumer as an example…
She’s been working her ass off in the comedy scene for years, but this year she became a sensation.
How did she rise to the top?
Because we LOVE her imperfection, which is perfect.
It’s so relatable.
She falls down? We’ve fallen down! She gets drunk? We love wine! She has drama in her relationship? We’ve been staring at our phone hoping that guy will text—even if that guy is our husband!
Amy Schumer succeeds BECAUSE she fails. We love to see her saying the thing we wish we could say, or do the thing we wish we could do, or make the lewd gesture we wish we could make. (Maybe just the first two…)
If there’s one lesson we can learn from her fame, it’s this:
Don’t be afraid to be yourself.
People like it when you’re vulnerable or weird. Show your true colors. Give people the chance to love you for you—even the kooky parts!
Waiting for your hair to come down,
Luisa
