Tips on how to start blogging

What is blogging?

Blogging is all about sharing your expertise in high-quality content on your own website.

With a blog that’s optimized for search engines, you get found by your ideal clients on Google. And because you offer a lot of free value with your blog, your target audience starts trusting your brand and some of them eventually convert to paying customers.

That said, blogging is often overlooked as a marketing channel.

So, is blogging worth it in 2023? Let’s talk about it.

Is blogging dead?

Blogging is far from dead.

According to HubSpot, marketers place search engine optimization (SEO) and blogging in their top three ways to market businesses in 2023. After all, blogging is still the most reliable way of getting found on Google.

But about 5,750 blog posts are published each minute. If you want to use blogging to boost your sales, channel organic traffic, and build an audience, you need to know how to make blogging work in your favor.

We’ll talk about that more in the next section.

But first, you’re probably wondering if these marketers are only referring to big businesses. Can blogging help small businesses like yours?

Luisa Zhou bio

Do blogs help small businesses?

In short, yes!

According to HubSpot’s Blog Research report, 56% of marketers who use blogging in their marketing strategies say it’s effective and 10% say it generates the biggest return on investment.

Personally, I grew my blog to a multiple six-figure income stream in just two years – today, it’s one of my most profitable and scalable marketing strategies.

Now you know what blogging is. But why, exactly, should you start a blog? Let’s find out.

26 benefits of blogging

There are tons of new ways to market your business in 2023. But blogging is one of the leading strategies. Want to know why?

Here are the 26 benefits of blogging for business.

1. Blogs bring in organic traffic

The number one benefit of blogging? Organic traffic.

By optimizing your blog posts for search engines, people find your blog organically, without any paid advertising. Over the long-term, the profitability of your business grows – as does the scalability.

Search engine marketing is scalable because billions of people use search engines every day. The more you do it and grow your rankings in search results, the more your efforts compound.

However, you need to build your traffic. Something I share how to do in my guides on SEO for coaches and blogging for coaches and here:

Key takeaway: Bring in traffic and increase your online visibility by focusing on SEO

2. Blogs make your business the “go-to” in your industry

By consistently publishing high-quality content, your business becomes the “go-to” in your industry. And as the ultimate industry leader, you build trust. At the same time, studies show that nine out of ten people say they’d buy from companies that gain their trust.

What’s more, someone reading your blog will be focused on YOUR blog post. Compare that to coming across your business when mindlessly scrolling through social media. The focus and attention you get are far higher.

My own blog posts are often in-depth guides that teach people how to take the steps to start their own businesses

Key takeaway: Create high-quality and unique blog posts to build your authority online

3. Blogs engage your audience

Did you know that 77% of internet users read blogs?

Blog articles are not just a source of information, but they’re also a source of entertainment. By creating engaging blogs, your audience will keep coming back for your high-value blog posts.

I often share fun facts and anecdotes, such as images of my dog Falco:

Key takeaway: Make your business blog posts FUN to read!

4. Blogs build brand awareness

81% of consumers say they buy from businesses with brands they trust. In other words, your brand is key to building a sustainable business.

And blogging is a great way to build your brand.

See, a blog that builds trust and authority is one that improves and strengthens your brand.

Key takeaway: Create valuable content to build your brand

5. Blogs build authenticity

Authenticity is key to successfully selling your products and services. And you can use your blog to build it. For instance, share your behind-the-scenes.

What tools do you use? How do your processes work? Have a fun picture to share of yourself or your team? All of those are authentic.

Key takeaway: Build authenticity with behind-the-scenes

6. Blogs generate leads for your services/products

Your blog has one task: To generate qualified leads for your business and convert customers.

You can think of your blog as a net. It catches your potential clients with quality content and leads them to engage with the rest of what you do. When people find your articles, many of them also explore your services and products. (Assuming your blog post is valuable and engaging.)

A great way to get more leads is to use opt-in forms (or other calls to action) to get people to sign up for your email list. Like I do here:

Key takeaway: Use opt-in forms and other calls to action to convert website visitors to leads

7. Blogs create shareable content

One of the best ways to market a small business is to create shareable content. And good news! Great blog articles are easy to share.

More shares equals more traffic to your blog.

Sharable content is useful or evokes emotions. For instance, people often share high-value ultimate guides and similar or add their commentary to trending or divisive topics.

This guide is an “ultimate guide” on how to start a life coaching business, and it’s generated thousands of shares

Key takeaway: Create quality content to spread the word about your business

8. Blogs can be repurposed into social media posts

There’s so much pressure to market your business everywhere in 2023. Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok, Twitter…

It’s time-consuming to create original content for all of those channels.

That’s where blogging comes in. While it’s a great online marketing channel on its own, you can break down your blog post into shareable bite-size pieces.

And you probably should…sharing your content on social media will help generate traffic to your blog.

Key takeaway: Repurpose blog content by breaking it down into shareable posts

9. Blogs educate potential customers

Most people who end up buying from you need some level of education on your product or service.

They either are completely new to your offering and need to understand why they need it.

Or they need to understand why your product/service is the best one out there.

Granted, you need to educate people on all the platforms you’re active on. But by educating your audience on your blog, you make your articles findable on Google so that it’s easier for people to find what they’re looking for.

Key takeaway: Educate people on your products and services

10. Blogs build links from other websites in your niche

One of the best ways to improve your SEO is to build links from other sites in your niche. These are called “backlinks.” Not only do backlinks help you gain search traffic, but they can also be great PR.

You can get backlinks to your website in two ways.

1. Guest blogging on other people’s blogs with original content you’ve created for them to post.

2. Creating great content on your own blog that others will use as an expert source.

Guest posting is a faster and more reliable way of doing this. So think about websites you could approach and guest feature on their blog.

Over time, your blog will generate more links as more people find out about it.

Key takeaway: Build backlinks to your website with guest posts and your own blog

11. Blogs create fans that return to read your blog

If your blog post is engaging and entertaining, people will come back. People often return to websites they trust – and your website could be that source of information in your niche.

This comes down to sharing value. “Value” doesn’t necessarily mean more information, but, rather, information people can act upon.

I always strive to give a lot of value in my blog posts – and many readers take action and come back for more, like this blog comment shows

Key takeaway: Create engaging content so that people come back for more

12. Blogs allow you to share company news and updates

You can use your blog to inform people about your business by posting updates about new products, promotions, locations, and more.

Think of your blog as a way to communicate your biggest news.

Key takeaway: Communicate news about your business and reach a wider audience

13. Blogs make it easier to pitch to podcasts and other media outlets

One of the strategies I recommend for getting new clients is to pitch to podcasts and other media channels as an expert in your field.

But guess what? A blog can really help you stand out as a thought leader in your niche – making it easier for you to land those podcast interviews.

So Money podcast image
Yes, you can get interviewed on top podcasts without a blog – I got interviewed on the top money podcast So Money way before I started my blog. BUT I had built my reputation in other ways, so blogging can be a real shortcut!

Key takeaway: Use your blog to get featured in the media

14. Blogs make you money

The whole point of business blogging is to make money by attracting more customers. You can promote your products and services – and even affiliate offers and other similar products/services.

Plus, a lot of people will be looking for “buyer-friendly” keywords on Google. Maybe they’re looking for how to “find a health coach.” That means, they’re quite ready to start working with one (or at least, seriously thinking about it).

A classic example is people searching for things like “best hiking boots” – those are people who are pretty sure they want hiking boots!

That’s an opportunity you can tap into with your blog by creating content around those “buyer” keywords.

Key takeaway: Make money in different and sustainable ways

15. Blogs help you grow your email list

Want to use email marketing as a sales funnel? You can use your blog to get the ball rolling. With a lead magnet (a free offer you use to convert potential customers into email subscribers), you incentivize people to sign up for your email list.

For instance, here’s how I use a lead magnet on my blog:

Screenshot of blog lead magnet

Key takeaway: Use a lead magnet to grow your email audience

16. Blogs allow you to share your expertise

Imagine having a place to share everything you know about your business.

Yeah – your blog. That’s a great place to write in-depth content where you share valuable insights and build trust with your audience.

In short, your blog helps you position yourself as an expert in your industry without having to rely on social media algorithms or similar.

Key takeaway: Use your blog to position yourself as an expert

17. Blogs provide a place for engaging your community

Your blog is a great place for building and engaging your community. By opening up your blog’s comment feed, people get a chance to engage with you – a great way to build a community feel on your blog.

Screenshot of blog comments
My blog consistently attracts comments from my audience

Key takeaway: Open your comment feed to allow people to engage

18. Blogs help you build your network

Blogs can be a great way to network. People might reach out to you directly based on your blog content. Or you might get opportunities like speaking gigs or partnerships.

Ultimately, you can network by sharing other people’s content and mentioning them or reaching out directly to other businesses with blogs.

Key takeaway: Use your blog to get opportunities you otherwise wouldn’t get

19. Blogs can help create an evergreen marketing strategy

The “holy grail” of business marketing? Automation and evergreen marketing strategies. Essentially, you set up systems that run in the background without requiring you to be actively working on them.

With blogs, you can build traffic from search engines like Google – so that you get “automated” traffic without having to actively post on social media.

Key takeaway: Use your blogs to build evergreen funnels

20. Blogs increase the valuation of your business

Your business is valued for its ability to make money. Search traffic sources tend to generate more profits, so they are often seen as more valuable than ad traffic. Similarly, having diversified website traffic streams is another green flag for how your business is valued.

If you’re planning to sell your business in the future, building website traffic now is key to getting a higher price in the future.

Key takeaway: Build blog traffic to make your business more valuable

21. Blogs are a marketing channel YOU own

Social media marketing can be a fast way to build an audience for your business. But guess what? You don’t own your social media accounts. You’ve probably heard of horror stories where people who built their businesses on a social media platform had their accounts hacked.

Don’t put yourself in that situation! Instead, diversify with your own marketing channels, like your blog and email list.

Key takeaway: Build your own marketing channel with your business blog

22. Blogs are a highly profitable sales channel

Blogging is a highly profitable sales channel. Why? Because you don’t have to pay to get clicks. Instead of drawing in traffic through ads, you welcome them in with content you’ve written for free.

(Granted, nothing is “free.” You’ve spent time writing those posts…but over time, your investment continues to pay off, unlike ads, which are a one-time investment.)

Key takeaway: Increase your profits with your blog sales

23. Blogs are a sustainable marketing channel

While it takes time to build your blog, it’s a marketing strategy that continues to deliver years from now. Ultimately, you don’t have to put as much effort into your blog as your social media channels.

Because to stay top of mind on social media, you need to create daily content. But with blogs, you can write a post and let it continue to gain traction for weeks, months, or even years.

Key takeaway: Use your business blog to get continuous traffic

Screenshot of blog traffic growth

24. Blogs help attract future employees

Blogging helps you build your brand. But not just your customer-facing brand. You’ll also build your employer brand.

See, if you put out stellar content, people are much more likely to see you as a leading authority in your niche. And that will attract talent.

Key takeaway: Use your business blog to attract the best talent

25. Blogs can boost your other marketing channels

Use your blogs to boost your other marketing channels. For instance, lots of YouTube videos rank on the first page of search engine results.

Embed your videos in your content to boost their rankings – and get more traffic to your YouTube channel. Like I do here:

Screenshot of YouTube video in blog post

What’s more, including video content in your blog helps you create more engaging blog posts. Win-win!

Key takeaway: Boost all of your marketing channels with your blog

26. Highlights customer experiences

Finally, you can use your blog to share stories from your customers. Highlight how your product or service has helped people by showcasing real case studies on your blog. It’s even better if you can get direct quotes from customers to add to your content for extra social proof.

Key takeaway: Use testimonials and case studies in your business blog content

Disadvantages of blogging

So those are the benefits of blogging – but it can’t be all good right? What are the disadvantages of blogging for your business? Here’s the truth.

If you’re new to business, blogging can feel like it’s taking time away from booking new business.

And honestly? You’re right!

Building a business blog can take time to see a return. It takes a while for Google to crawl your website and start to understand who you are and what you do from the content you create.

Furthermore, by investing time into your blog, you’re taking away time and resources that could be spent on “faster” marketing strategies.

So in the beginning, focus on easier, short-term strategies first to make your first sales. That could be using social media or your network to get the word out about your products or services.

Now, I’m not saying ignore your blog. Once you have a few clients, you can allocate some time to create one or two blog articles a month.

But if you’re just starting out, the majority of your energy should go toward getting your first clients through the door.

How to get started with blogging?

Now you know the advantages and disadvantages of blogging, how do you get started? Here is a step-by-step process on how to start blogging for your business.

Research your industry

If you want to get found on Google, you have to answer the questions people are asking about your industry.

How do you do that? By using Google search to discover keywords (a keyword is a word or phrase that your target audience is searching around your niche).

Let’s say you’re a health coach who helps people lose weight.

Keywords that people are searching for around your niche could be:

“Weight loss coach”

“Weight loss coaching”

“How to lose weight”

You can do some basic keyword research completely free by using Google search. All you need to do is put a search term into the space bar and see what suggestions Google makes. These are all keywords that you could target if they are relevant to your business.

Create a content schedule

So now you have a list of keywords or questions you can target with your content strategy.

Start by brainstorming topics around the keywords that you’ve collected. Then create a sustainable schedule that works with your workflow.

Write out a content marketing strategy for the next three months with your blog topics and stick to it.

Sounds like too much work? Here’s how to make it easier.

Make your blog manageable

Let’s face it. Not all of us LOVE writing. But getting started can be easier than you think.

To start, you don’t need a ton of content. Focus on niche, low-competition keywords in your industry and create one to two in-depth, high-quality blog posts around them per month.

This will get you started getting your first wave of organic traffic.

You don’t need thousands of hits on your website to make sales. You just need to be seen by the right handful of people – your audience.

If you hate writing, don’t panic! You don’t have to manage your blog forever. After the first couple of posts, you can outsource to a freelancer to take over.

Over to you!

There you have it! Now you know the top benefits of blogging for business. Blogging offers tons of benefits for businesses – from increased profitability to flexibility.

Now, I’d love to hear from you.
