How to get your first paying coaching clients

Have you been trying to get coaching clients and wondering…is this really possible? Is someone really going to want to pay me to coach them?

If you’ve been thinking that, you are in the right place. In this video, I’m going to share with you my simple, foolproof method for getting your first paying coaching clients.

Step #1 Know What Your Clients Want

The first step is to make sure that you know what your clients actually want AND the language they’re using to describe it.

For example, if you’re a career coach, it might feel like you’re saying the same thing when you say want to uplevel your career vs. are you tired of watching that guy or that woman get the promotion you deserve?

But I’ll tell you, your ideal clients will resonate with that second version a LOT more…b/c those are the exact words they’re using to describe their situation. And they’ll be a lot more interested in what you have to offer.

It’s super simple to get clear on this. Get someone who is a potential client on the phone and ask them —

what’s your #1 challenge related to what you do? Why is that a problem? And what would you like it to look like if that problem was solved?

Then, take lots of notes, because that’s going to give you everything you need.

Step #2 Know YOUR solution

Once you know that, you can figure out how your knowledge and expertise can be used to create that solution that you now know your ideal client wants.

Basically, you’ve just asked your ideal client what they want, they’ve told you exactly what they would be willing to pay for, and now you’re going to create exactly that.

This is really important. For example, if you’re a health coach, your ideal clients are probably going to tell you that they want to fit into that pair of jeans, or lose the tummy, or feel good about themselves again.

Let’s say you help them through eating better and working out. You’re not going to tell people…hey, I help you eat better and work out.

Instead, you’re going to say to them…hey, I’m going to help you fit back into that pair of jeans, lose that tummy, and feel good about your health again.

How you help them will still be the same, but what you’re doing is sharing the result that they’re going to get vs. how you’re going to help them, b/c they care about the result WAY more.

This is the difference between having people be excited and interested in what you offer and people reading your offer and thinking….eh.

Step #3 Give a “Quick Win”

Now, when you’re starting out, you have no audience and no brand recognition online, so how do you build trust with potential clients that you can actually help them so they are interested in hiring you?

This is where a “Quick Win” solution comes in.

This is a solution that doesn’t help your client solve their ENTIRE problem but gives them enough to believe that the end result they want is possible AND that YOU are the person to help them.

Let me give you a few examples…

If you’re a health coach, and you help people lose 20 pounds or more, your quick win solution could be to help them jumpstart their weight loss with the first 5 pounds

Or if you’re a relationship coach who helps nice guys find and get the girl they love, your quick win could be to first show them why they always get friend-zoned

These are just two examples, but as you can see, a good quick win needs to do two things:
First, it has to show them enough to believe that you CAN help them get results

And second, it has to lead into your bigger solution. If you help someone lose their first 5 pounds, of course they’re going to want your help losing more. Or if you can show someone why they always get friend-zoned and how to get out of it, of course they’ll want your help going beyond that to relationship-zone. I just made that word up, but you know what I mean.

Step #4 Get coaching clients after offering the “Quick win” for free

Which leads us into the final step…

Offer the quick win for free.

You can do this by offering a free coaching session where you help your ideal clients get that quick win.

This doesn’t have to be long, it should only be about 20 to 30 minutes.

And at the beginning of the free session, you’ll let them know, hey I’m going to help you do this, and show you what more is possible for you. If you’re interested in getting my help to do more, we’ll talk about the end of this session how I can help you more, alright?

That way, you set the expectation from the beginning that if they like the quick win, which of course they will, you’ll talk more about how you can help them more when they hire you.

So those are the steps to get coaching clients. I’ve had clients use these exact steps to get their first clients in just a few days or weeks, and I can’t wait to hear about how you use them to get YOURS too.
