What is an Empowerment Coach? + Become a GREAT One

Wondering what empowerment coaching is and how to become a coach yourself? That’s what we’re going to talk about in this article.

Empowerment coaching is an incredibly impactful coaching niche – you empower people to improve their self-confidence, reduce their limiting beliefs, and achieve their life-long goals.

Plus, if you decide to start your own personal empowerment coaching business, you can do things like:

  • Set your own work schedule and rates
  • Decide what kinds of clients you want to work with
  • Work from anywhere

Alright, let’s get into it!

What is empowerment coaching?

In a nutshell, empowerment coaching is a personal development coach who helps people work through limiting beliefs that can prevent them from pursuing their goals.

So, as you can see, empowerment coaching can help all kinds of people in all kinds of different life circumstances. Empowerment coaches encourage clients to feel empowered and build a fulfilling life.

But what if you want to narrow your focus as a coach?

One option is to use the empowerment coaching process and niche down to work with clients who have more specific needs.

For example, you could be a spiritual empowerment coach or a mindset and empowerment coach (depending on your interests).

Think about what kinds of clients you’d like to help and see if there’s a need for that type of coach.

Because remember: There are a LOT of people who could use empowerment coaching for all kinds of challenges.

You could be an empowerment coach who specializes in helping…

  • People who need to rebuild their self-confidence after many unsuccessful job interviews
  • People who struggle to put their best foot forward in dating
  • People who lack assertiveness in their professional life

… and more!

As you can see, there are plenty of interesting sub-niches within empowerment coaching to choose from.

And speaking of niches, let’s answer an important question:

What is the difference between a life coach and an empowerment coach?

Empowerment coaching and life coaching might seem similar, but here’s an important difference to know:

Life coaching is REALLY broad.

Why?

Because, as you can probably guess from the name, it’s all about helping people improve their lives.

So, that can mean anything from coaching college students who want to start a business to helping men lose weight in middle age.

Empowerment coaching, on the other hand, is a niche on its own (even though you CAN niche down even further if you want to).

Alright, now let’s dig deeper and talk about what the average empowerment coaching salary is.

How much do empowerment coaches make?

According to a study from the Coaching Federation, the average rate coaches charge in North America is $272 per hour

And here’s the thing…

Those coaches work an average of just 11.9 hours per week

Which means?

They’re able to have a huge impact on people’s lives while at the same time maintaining a good work-life balance.

So yes, that’s one of the benefits of starting your own coaching business and working for yourself (and I’ll talk more about how you can become an empowerment coach later on).

For now, let’s talk about what empowerment coaches do to make a difference in their clients’ lives.

How can empowerment coaches help?

As an empowerment coach, here are a few specific areas you can work on with your clients to help them get the results they’re looking for:

Personal strengths and weaknesses

To overcome mental barriers to getting what your clients want, it can be incredibly useful to pinpoint their strengths and weaknesses first.

So, as a coach, this is a good place to start – to help your clients become more self-aware.

Once you know what your clients struggle with and excel at, you’ll be able to create a personalized plan to help them get from where they are to their objective.

And speaking of which…

Life goals

What do your clients want? What are their plans and hopes for the future?

Help them identify what they’re working towards so that the two of you can track their progress together.

For example, maybe your client wants to get promoted but doesn’t think it’s possible. Or maybe they want to ask someone out but they lack self-confidence.

No matter what their challenge is, you can have a huge impact by starting with their end goal and working backwards to where they are now.

Self-acceptance

In coaching, a core part of helping your clients move past their limiting beliefs is encouraging them to embrace who they are rather than trying to become someone they’re not.

Because here’s the thing…

Real empowerment isn’t about “faking it” and pretending to be someone who’s confident and who has their life together.

What it’s really about is building on who a person already is and not letting fear or doubt stop them from living the life they really want. And as a coach, you can play a key role here in helping your clients develop positive self-talk.

Okay, now let’s talk about empowerment coaching certifications to know about.

Do you need an empowerment coach certification?

Believe it or not, you actually don’t need to get certified to become a great empowerment coach.

And the reason is simple: As a coach, your mission is to guide and encourage your clients to the results they want.

You’re NOT there to be a therapist or offer mental health services.

If you have experience helping people go from point A to point B (even if you’ve never been paid to do it yet), you can be a coach.

Alright, but maybe you’re thinking, “I know I don’t NEED a certification, but I’d still like to get one. What are my options?”

Here are a few reputable empowerment coaching certification programs to look at.

Okay, now that we’ve gone over some good certification options, let’s answer a key question:

How do you become an empowerment coach?

If you’re ready to get started as a coach, here are some important steps to take so you can scale as quickly as possible…

Find your coaching niche

Remember how I talked earlier about the importance of niching down as a coach? Alright, let’s talk a bit more about that.

When you choose a niche, you’re able to speak directly to people who are looking for the coaching you offer.

And this actually HELPS you find clients. A lot of people worry that if they niche down, they’ll limit their options, but the opposite is true:

By niching down, you’ll have a lot more focus.

Instead of saying, “I help people” (which is super broad) you could say, “I help college students overcome limiting beliefs so they can get the high-paying job of their dreams after graduation.”

See what a difference niching down makes?

By pinpointing WHO you’re trying to help, you’ll be able to dive deep into the unique challenges a particular demographic faces and help them where they’re at.

And the thing is, there are so many ways to niche down even further as an empowerment coach, depending on your interests and background.

So, for example, you could help:

  • Women who struggle with self-confidence in dating
  • Freelancers or small business owners who need help seeing the value they offer so they can raise their rates and get paid what they’re worth
  • High school students who are afraid to apply to their dream colleges because they worry they’re not good enough to get admitted

When you’re trying to pick a niche, think what:

  • Cause or mission excites me?
  • Have I done in the past that could help me help others?
  • Are my strengths?

I talk more about niching down in this video:

Create an empowerment coaching package

Putting together a coaching package can feel intimidating at first. The good news? It’s actually really simple once you understand one thing:

WHY your clients want you to help them in the first place.

Let me explain…

When clients come to you, they’re not looking for some fancy template or PDF. They’re not concerned about how pretty the graphic design on your website is or what fonts you choose.

Yes, those things are nice to have. But they’re extras.

What your clients are really after are the RESULTS you can offer.

Because here’s the thing…

If you have an amazing website that you’ve poured tons of time and effort into but can’t offer tangible results, you won’t get very far as a coach.

On the other hand, if you CAN deliver real results, your clients won’t care what your coaching package includes (or doesn’t).

Alright, so now that you know what the key ingredient to a good coaching package is, how should you set it up effectively?

First, let’s talk about length…

I recommend offering 3-month-long coaching packages. That way, you’ll be able to offer a tangible result for your clients WITHOUT getting stuck in a long contract.

Plus, 90 days of coaching is more affordable for most people than, say, a year (which is also a long commitment for you and for them).

Okay, once you’ve decided how long you want your coaching offer to last, break it up into actionable steps.

And remember: Every step should point to the ultimate goal your clients are paying you to help them achieve. And this will vary based on who you’re trying to help and what their goal is.

(Side note: See how important defining a niche is for this step? Without a niche, it’s going to be really difficult to guide your clients to a specific result.)

So, what kind of support should you offer during your program?

Here’s what I recommend: Offer weekly coaching sessions of 45-60 minutes to answer client questions, discuss their challenges and victories, and make suggestions for how they can do better.

And, in between these calls, you can offer your clients another way to reach you if they need extra help (by email, text, or Voxer, for example).

My advice?

Don’t overcomplicate this step.

You don’t have to give your clients a million different options to get in touch. In fact, having a lot of choices can get overwhelming, so just pick one preferred communication method and stick to it.

Price your empowerment coaching package

How much should you charge for your coaching? And what kind of pricing structure should you choose?

Look: As a coach and business owner, you have a lot of freedom here.

In other words, you can set rates that work for YOU. So, what are your pricing options?

There are a few different ways you could go:

  • Hourly
  • Monthly
  • Per-package

Okay, let me briefly go over each of these (and talk about which one I recommend).

With hourly pricing, you get paid for the hours you put in… Which means to earn more, you have to work more. And that’s not a great long-term strategy if your goal is to have more freedom in your professional life.

Plus, with this pricing model, people pay you for your time rather than the result they want

And remember: Your clients don’t care whether it takes you two hours to help them or 20 as long as they get the result they’re after.

But what about monthly pricing?

Here, the problem is about the same: Your clients will pay you based on your time. And as a coach, you want to offer great results while being able to work less, not more.

And that’s what’s so great about charging per package: You charge based on RESULTS.

Okay, but how much should you charge exactly?

If you’re a new coach, I recommend charging $1,500 for a 3-month coaching package

That way, your coaching will be a valuable investment without being too expensive. You can also charge a little more for a payment plan to make your coaching even more accessible.

Market your empowerment coaching services

Once you know who you want to help, how can you find your ideal clients?

Here’s one effective method: Join relevant online or social media groups and build relationships with people who might need the coaching you offer.

What’s great about this method is that you don’t need to have a beautiful website or spend a fortune on ads to get traction.

If you can build trust and show people HOW you can help them, they’ll be much more likely to buy from you later on.

In fact, that’s exactly what happened to me: I coached someone for free for two weeks and offered so much value that she ended up asking if I could help her even more.

I said yes and charged her $5,000. And because I had shown her that I could help, she agreed.

(If you want more marketing ideas, though, I have an entire article about that here.)
